About Me.
I'm Lee Hughes, a Product Design Director with over two decades of senior design leadership across London, Hong Kong, Athens, and Southeast Asia.
My career has taken me across some of the most demanding and diverse design challenges in the industry: rebuilding critical financial infrastructure for Legal & General, designing life-extending technology for AstraZeneca in collaboration with cardiologists and psychologists, creating a global design system adopted across BT's entire digital estate, and bringing Van Cleef & Arpels online in Hong Kong without losing a single note of one of the world's most tightly governed luxury brands.
I operate at the level where design, strategy, and organisational complexity meet. I lead teams, shape product vision, manage client relationships, and make the difficult calls that determine whether a project delivers something genuinely valuable or merely functional. I care deeply about all things design, but I understand that design in service of the wrong strategy is just expensive decoration.
My background spans agency, in-house, start-ups, and embedded Director roles, which means I understand design from multiple sides: the pressure of a client relationship, the politics of an internal rebrand, and the long-term thinking required to build systems and teams that outlast any single project.
Open to hybrid, fully remote, full-time and contract opportunities across Europe and Southeast Asia.
If you're looking for a design leader who brings both strategic clarity and genuine craft to the table, I'd like to talk.

Craft Creative
Product Design Director · Creative & Experience Lead November 2023 – Present
· London / Cambodia
Craft Creative is my independent design consultancy — the vehicle through which I take on senior design leadership engagements for enterprise clients who need Director-level design thinking without a full-time hire.
I operate as a strategic design partner from discovery through to delivery, embedded alongside client teams and accountable for the quality and direction of the work. Current and recent engagements span financial services and technology sectors.
Alongside client work, I advise leadership teams on AI-first design operations — implementing prototyping workflows using Lovable and Replit that enable non-technical stakeholders to evaluate working prototypes rather than static designs. This shifts executive decision-making from abstract approval to informed evaluation, reducing concept-to-prototype timelines significantly and compressing the gap between design intent and built reality.
Craft Creative is also the home for a growing range of entrepreneurial projects. The most significant of these is an online design education platform currently in development — a comprehensive, localised curriculum covering the full arc of a design career, from junior through to senior level, with the kind of regional specificity, cultural depth, and professional nuance that global platforms simply do not offer. We are launching first in Cambodia, with plans to expand further across Southeast Asia in the coming years.
Alongside the platform, we develop smaller-scale resources and tools designed to help and inform, that are practical, accessible, and built with the same attention to craft and clarity that runs through everything we do.
TCS Interactive
Design Director
January 2020 – October 2023 · London
TCS Interactive is the experience design arm of Tata Consultancy Services — one of the world's largest technology and consulting organisations. As Design Director, I was embedded across a global enterprise portfolio as a senior design leader and strategic partner, responsible for creative direction, team leadership, and stakeholder management at C-suite level.
My portfolio of clients during this period included some of the UK's most complex and high-profile digital transformation programmes.
Nest - Digital Ecosystem Nest is the UK's largest workplace pension scheme, managing retirement savings for millions of members. I led the design strategy for a multi-year digital transformation programme, repositioning design as a product strategy function rather than a delivery service. I established the design principles and systems architecture that governed a £1.5 billion GBP digital ecosystem from discovery through to launch, working directly with Nest's executive team to ensure design was influencing roadmap decisions before they were made in engineering.
BT Global - Design System BT Global's digital products were growing faster than the systems governing them, producing an inconsistent estate that was increasingly difficult to maintain and falling short of the accessibility standards expected of a global brand. I built the BT Global Design System from the ground up, beginning with a comprehensive audit of the existing estate rather than building from a blank slate. Accessibility was embedded at component level from day one rather than applied as a compliance checklist at the end. Documentation was written for both designers and developers in language that made the right choice the obvious one. The system was adopted across multiple product teams globally and became the working reference for digital design across BT's entire estate.
Legal & General - Pension Contribution Platform Legal & General's pension contribution platform was failing the HR administrators and finance teams who depended on it, and failing the tens of thousands of scheme members whose retirement savings it managed. I led a cross-functional team of seven through the full redesign, reframing FCA compliance as a design tool rather than a constraint. That reframe produced an interface that was clearer, more deliberate, and more trustworthy than the original — not despite the regulatory requirements but because of how we chose to work within them. Contribution processing reduced from hours to minutes. The platform achieved full accessibility compliance for the first time and was subsequently adopted as the internal design benchmark for the wider L&G division.
Financial Ombudsman Service - End-to-End Redesign The Financial Ombudsman Service helps people resolve disputes with financial institutions, placing it at the intersection of legal process, bureaucratic complexity, and genuine human distress. I oversaw the full engagement as Product Design Director, leading a team of six to eight across UX research, service design, product design, and content. The single most impactful structural decision was remapping the entire information architecture around user mental models rather than FOS institutional process — shifting from how the organisation was structured internally to the questions users actually arrived with. We redesigned the complaints submission journey, rebuilt the internal caseworker tooling, and, critically, surfaced process-level organisational problems that design alone could not solve, documenting them explicitly as recommendations to the FOS leadership team. Knowing when design is the right tool, and when it is not, is one of the harder judgements in service design.
